Anthony Nyström
Chief Technology Officer
What inspires me
Problems where the measurement is as hard as the solution. Engineers who would rather be corrected than be right. The moment a model stops being a demo and starts carrying real weight for someone who is counting on it.
In Demand Skills
Designing evaluation methods that reveal what a system actually does, not what it appears to do. Translating research capability into production systems that survive contact with real users. Building AI and data science teams from the first hire through scale. Making complex technical tradeoffs legible to executives, funders, and domain experts. Architecting data and ML infrastructure across cloud environments and specialized hardware. Creating advancement paths for engineers who want to grow without leaving the craft.
Adage
"Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure." Oliver Sacks, Gratitude
Bio
Anthony Nyström builds technical systems for problems where being wrong has consequences. Over 25 years he has worked as a Data Scientist, founder, CTO, and principal architect across scientific computing, healthcare, national wildfire research, and enterprise software, consistently drawn to work where accuracy is not a matter of taste. As Chief Technology Officer at Frontier, he leads technical strategy across the Responsible AI, Impact, and Learning and Leadership Development practices, along with the internal platforms, security posture, and engineering capability that make the firm's work possible.
His career has moved between building companies and building capability inside them. He founded a scientific software company that delivered one of the earliest comprehensive digital medical records systems, along with tools for medical imaging, bioinformatics, and computational chemistry. He pioneered live mobile-to-web video streaming and Bluetooth-based proximity social matching, taking that company from bootstrap through venture funding to a successful exit. He has since led machine learning organizations through periods of rapid growth, built data science functions from nothing, and directed applied AI teams delivering language understanding, computer vision, agentic systems, and MLOps infrastructure for enterprise and federal clients.
Trained in both computer science and the life sciences, Anthony keeps returning to the domains where models meet physical reality: genomes, bodies, forests, weather. He currently contributes to an NSF-funded global wildfire research collaboration spanning NSF, NASA, the Department of Defense, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Oliver Sacks called being a thinking animal on this planet a privilege and an adventure, and that is close to how Anthony treats the work. Curiosity is the reason to build, and rigor is what you owe the people who will depend on what you built. At Frontier that means defining the claim, designing the test, respecting the limits of the evidence, and keeping human judgment where it belongs.
He is an AI 2030 Global Senior Fellow and a member of the AI 2030 Strategic Advisory Board, has published on the ethics of big data and molecular modeling, and has served as a mentor and technical advisor to early-stage companies in neuroscience and consumer technology. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
Frontier uses this assessment to identify our unique strengths and maximize our teamliness - how we collaborate effectively as cross-functional teams. We often pair colleagues with opposite strengths to turbocharge our creativity and impact.
